Launching a new, culturally grounded experience within one of the world’s most influential Black cultural convenings.
ESSENCE Festival of Culture
Audience-First Experience Design | Cultural Storytelling
The Challenge
The first-ever Men’s Experience needed to engage across gender, identity, and generation. It had to feel expansive and relevant on its own while integrating seamlessly into the ESSENCE Festival ecosystem.

What We Rewired
- Single activation → multi-zone experience system
- Passive consumption → movement, participation, and connection
- Standalone moments → one coherent cultural journey
What We Built
We designed a multi-zone experience system that moved people through storytelling, play, conversation, and connection. Each zone worked as a chapter in one cultural journey, so men felt seen, welcomed, and invited to participate—not just watch. The experience was choreographed to fit inside the broader ESSENCE Festival while still standing as its own platform.
What Changed
- A high-engagement, scalable platform that surpassed foot traffic goals by 116%
- 25 curated stage moments with high-profile celebrity talent (e.g., Method Man, Michael Ealy) and sustained audience participation
- A strong foundation for future growth within the festival ecosystem
OS Lens
This work illustrates how narrative and experience systems create belonging by design, not by accident.
